Researchers Link Most Spam To Only 50 ISPs
The study was conducted for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) by researchers at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and Michigan State University, who examined 109 billion spam messages from 170 million unique IP addresses, gathered via a "spam trap" from 2005 to 2009.
One major finding is that where there's spam, you'll find an infected -- aka zombie -- machine. That's because according to the study data, on average 80% to 90% of the world's spam comes from infected machines. Researchers also found that the 33 member countries that comprise the OECD, as well as Estonia, the Russian Federation, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, and South Africa, "harbor over 60% of all infected machines worldwide registered by the spam trap." In other words, the majority of infected machines aren't laying low in countries nearly off the grid.
But perhaps the biggest surprise, said the researchers, was that "we discovered that infected machines display a highly concentrated pattern." In particular, "the networks of just 50 ISPs account for around half of all infected machines worldwide." In other words, "the bulk of the infected machines are not located in the networks of obscure or rogue ISPs, but in those of established, well-known ISPs."
The results suggest a formidable new way to block botnets. With a caution that historical data is no guarantee of future botnet behavior, the researchers said that "current efforts to bring about collective action -- through industry self-regulation, co-regulation, or government intervention -- might initially achieve progress by focusing on the set of ISPs that together have the lion's share of the market."
In other words, if policymakers want to maximize their bang for buck, start by improving the security practices of the 50 ISPs that host half the world's spam.
Microsoft: Consumers Are Worried About Pirated Software
That’s the central conclusion of a recent Microsoft survey of nearly 40,000 consumers in 20 countries that gauged perceptions about pirated software. According to the survey, 80 percent of consumers are worried about the risks of using counterfeit software, while 70 percent see genuine software as a more secure and stable alternative to pirated wares.
People in general are worried about the security implications of running pirated software, particularly data loss and identity theft from malware that's surreptitiously loaded onto their PCs during the installation process. However, many folks discover the hard way that they've bought illegal software when they load it on their PCs and find it won't activate.
"The most common complaint is simply that counterfeit doesn’t always work or protect them the way genuine software does," said David Finn, Associate General Counsel, Worldwide Anti-counterfeiting, Microsoft, in a blog post. "It may not install, or validate, or it might behave strangely because of viruses or malware."
There's a slight difference of opinion on how best to tackle the issue of counterfeit software and protect consumers: 65 percent of survey respondents believe the government should get involved, while 72 percent want to see software vendors take a more aggressive stance in tracing down pirates.
Interestingly, the survey makes no mention of the legal liabilities that consumers take on by running pirated software. The Business Software Alliance, an industry group that wields quasi-governmental powers when it comes to getting companies to submit to software audits, has been an aggressive enforcer for Microsoft and many other tech companies. The BSA doesn't generally go after consumers, but people that run pirated software still risk severe penalties if caught.
Microsoft estimates that up to one third of its customers worldwide may be running counterfeit copies of Windows, but antipiracy technologies such as Windows Genuine Advantage have previously flagged genuine users as pirates on several occasions.
In January 2007, Microsoft acknowledged that WGA had mistakenly identified more than half a million Windows users as software pirates. In August of that year, the validation scheme for Windows XP and Vista angered thousands of users by flagging legitimate versions of the OS as pirated, and causing some Vista users' copies to enter reduced functionality mode.

Robert Louis Stevenson Quotes
Robert Louis Stevenson quotes are a great way to remember Robert Louis Stevenson’s birthday today, November 13.
Robert Louis Stevenson, famous for writing Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, also wrote a variety of other novels, poetry and short stories.
Here are some great Robert Louis Stevenson quotes, some of which are fun to share with your kids:
“Wine is bottled poetry.”
“A friend is a gift you give yourself.”
“All speech, written or spoken, is a dead language, until it finds a willing and prepared hearer.”
“Books are good enough in their own way, but they are a poor substitute for life.”
“Compromise is the best and cheapest lawyer.”
“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.”
Even if the doctor does not give you a year, even if he hesitates about a month, make one brave push and see what can be accomplished in a week.
"Every heart that has beat strongly and cheerfully has left a hopeful impulse behind it in the world, and bettered the tradition of mankind."
"Every man has a sane spot somewhere."
"Every one lives by selling something."
"Everybody, soon or late, sits down to a banquet of consequences."
"Everyone lives by selling something, whatever be his right to it."
"Fiction is to the grown man what play is to the child; it is there that he changes the atmosphere and tenor of his life."
"For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.
Give us grace and strength to forbear and to persevere. Give us courage and gaiety and the quiet mind, spare to us our friends, soften to us our enemies."
Boxing Sage Avi Korine Expects Good Fight Between Pacquiao, Margarito
Boxing sage Avi “Shoefly” Korine expects the fight of Margarito and Manny to be one of the best fights of the year.
According to boxing sage Avi “Shoefly” Korine, people will really see a lot of action in the Pacquiao vs. Margarito fight. He said that the show will feature a bird of prey in descent, a leopard giving chase or more like a regal steed at the races. He said that for him, Pacquiao is like a secretariat powering down the tracks while onlookers weep in the stands. He said that he thinks Manny Pacquiao will win this fight.
Korine said that Pacquiao has well honed body that is very suited for the fight. He said that he cannot really remark enough on what a rare and perfect thing it is. He said that it is a true for muddlers and tumblers like them that are lurching about in the muck.
Korine said that Manny Pacquiao represents a fullness of being a rare and special boxer which he calls an inspiration to all the boxers out there. He said that Manny has a gift from the void that only selected people have and it is a blessing and joy to watch how this boxer fights.
He also commented about Antonio Margarito. He said that he is something of the opposite. He said that he always finds this boxer unwatchable and unsympathetic and more like a rebuke to the way that he tries to justify and enjoy the enjoyment of this sport. He said that people like him will really want to build narrative filters and deeper subtexts to the sport itself so it will go beyond blood and bones and became one of the histories.
He said that Manny Pacquiao will show Margarito how it is to fight a gifted boxer.

NASA Engineers Examine Space Shuttle Discovery Ahead of Repairs
NASA engineers are beginning their examination of the fuel leak that stalled last week's launch of the space shuttle Discovery to the International Space Station.
Engineers are taking steps to remove and inspect the component where the leak was discovered on Discovery's huge orange external fuel tank. Early work to study a 20-inch (51-centimeter) crack in the fuel tank's foam insulation is also planned for this week, NASA officials said.
"Right now they're basically trying to gather as much information as possible before they start actually making repairs for any of the issues that we're working," NASA spokesman Allard Beutel told SPACE.com. "It's not a matter of simply making the repairs. They want to know what caused this in the first place."
NASA is now hoping for a Nov. 30 launch date for Discovery's final flight before it is retired along with the rest of shuttle fleet in 2011.
The hydrogen gas leak was detected Nov. 5 as Discovery's 15-story external tank was being filled with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen – the cryogenic propellant that powers the shuttle's three main engines during liftoff and ascent into orbit.
Discovery's fuel tank leak
The leak was in the ground umbilical carrier plate, or GUCP, which is an attachment point between the external tank and a 17-inch (43-cm) pipe that carries gaseous hydrogen safely away from the shuttle to the flare stack, where it is burned off. NASA encountered similar leaks on two previous shuttle missions but wants to understand how the latest event occurred.
Engineers are expected to record measurements as the shuttle stands on its seaside launch pad at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. An analysis will be performed after the GUCP has been removed, and Discovery's STS-133 mission managers will then assess repair options.
Tank crack concerns
A crack in the foam insulation of the shuttle's external tank was also found during an inspection following Discovery's scrubbed launch.
The roughly 20-inch crack is located in the inner foam on a different part of the tank than the fuel leak. It is more than twice as long as previously thought. NASA initially estimated the crack at 7 inches (almost 18 cm) long, mission managers said. [Photo of the cracked foam]
Beutel said that while work on the leaking fuel line will begin today (Nov. 9), engineers are not expected to begin work on the foam until Wednesday.
Technicians studying the crack will use non-destructive terahertz or X-ray scans to look beneath the foam for any other potential hazards.
NASA is extremely wary of any large cracks in the foam insulation that coats space shuttle fuel tanks, because debris from the cracks pose a danger to the shuttles during flight.
Foam debris that separated during the launch of the space shuttle Columbia in 2003 led to the loss of that shuttle and its seven-astronaut crew as the spacecraft re-entered Earth's atmosphere for landing.
Since then, NASA has instituted measures to reduce the amount of foam on shuttle fuel tanks, and technicians perform several inspections before launch. Astronauts also inspect their shuttle heat shields for damage while they are in space, using robotic arm-mounted sensors.
While NASA studies the problems, Cmdr. Steve Lindsey and pilot Eric Boe, who flew back to NASA's Johnson Space Center with their fellow STS-133 crewmembers following Friday's launch postponement, planned to return today for a series of training exercises in the agency's shuttle training aircraft.
The next possible time that Discovery can attempt a liftoff to the International Space Station is Nov. 30 at 4:05 a.m. EST (0905 GMT). Discovery is scheduled for an 11-day supply mission to the space station to deliver a humanoid robot helper for the station crew and a new storage room for the orbiting lab.
The STS-133 mission will be Discovery's grand finale in space before being retired.

L.A.’s Mystery ‘Missile’ Is Probably a Jet
The various arms of the U.S. military scrambled this morning to explain the creepy footage, snapped by a CBS news helicopter, of what appeared to be a missile flying into the air, not far from Los Angeles. U.S. Strategic Command, Northern Command, Air Force Space Command, Air Force Global Strike Command, the Navy and the Missile Defense Agency were all left struggling to give an answer for what appeared to be a rogue ICBM. But to GlobalSecurity.org director John Pike, there’s an easy explanation: “It is obviously an airplane.”
“The aircraft is flying towards the observer; the air over the Pacific is clear, so the contrail is visible all the way to the horizon. This creates the optical illusion of a rocket flying up, rather than the actual situation of an airplane flying horizontally,” Pike tells Danger Room. “The object generating the contrail is moving too slowly to be a rocket; the contrail is not expanding as the ‘rocket’ gains ‘altitude’ — which would be the case as the exhaust plume expanding into less dense high altitude air.”
MIT astronomer Jonathan McDowell tells New Scientist pretty much the same thing. Although he does note that the Navy owns a missile target and launch facility at nearby San Nicolas Island.
This wouldn’t be the first time a plane was mistaken for a missile. On New Year’s Eve, an aircraft was photographed above San Clemente, California, looking eerily missile-esque. In December, 2008, there was a similar case of mistaken identity when a plane flew near the coastal town of Carmel.
“The short explanation is that we don’t see a lot of jet contrails head-on, especially from the vantage point of a helicopter. So, it looks like a missile to everyone else,” writes Danger Room alum (and New America Foundation analyst) Jeffrey Lewis. “But it probably isn’t.”
He adds, “That would explain why no one else in L.A. saw a missile launch other than the helicopter crew — or, rather, why everyone else from every other angle saw a typical jet contrail — and why [America's missile-warning system] didn’t light up like a Christmas Tree.”
Wix Khalifa In Jail for Alleged Drug Possession
Wix Khalifa In Jail for alleged drug possession after his show at East Carolina University.
According to several reports, Wiz Khalifa was arrested last night following his performance at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.
The Pittsburgh rapper was in town for a show at East Carolina University when his performance was cut short 45 minutes into the set, said reports.
The 22-year-old rapper was in town to perform at Wright Auditorium, as part of the national Waken Baken Tour 2010.
The 60-date-tour kicked off September 16th and ends in Boston on November 21st. Tonight, rapper Big Krit was tapped to open for Wiz Khalifa.
The 23-year-old rapper, who's real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, is known for his love for weed. In a past interview, Wiz boasted about spending around $10,000 a month, just on marijuana.
The rapper's current hit "Black and Yellow" is in heavy rotation around the country.
He has also recently launched a Wiz Khalifa brand of king-size rolling papers. His last tweet read, Smoke outs greenville, nc tonight. fall thru wit ur finest plant life.

Missile launch off California
Video posted on the CBS News website shows an object flying through the evening sky Monday that left a large contrail, or vapor trail. A news helicopter owned by KCBS, a CBS affiliate in Los Angeles, shot the video.
Pentagon officials were stumped by the event. "Nobody within the Department of Defense that we've reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is, where it came from," Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said.
While the vapor cloud captured on video resembled that created by a rocket in flight, military officials said they didn't know of any launches in the area.
Lapan said that "all indications" were that the Defense Department was not involved with the object.
One expert called it an optical illusion. "It's an airplane that is heading toward the camera and the contrail is illuminated by the setting sun," said John Pike, director of the U.S.-based security analyst group globalsecurity.org.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, issued a statement jointly with the U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM, saying that the contrail was not the result of a foreign military launching a missile. It provided no details.
"We can confirm that there is no threat to our nation," the statement said. "We will provide more information as it becomes available."
NORTHCOM is the U.S. defense command and NORAD is a U.S.-Canadian organization charged with protecting the U.S. from the threat of missiles or hostile aircraft.
Pike said the object could not have been a rocket because it appeared to alter its course.
"The local station chopped up the video and so it's hard to watch it continuously," Pike said. "But at one place you can see it has changed course _ rockets don't do that."
Pike said he didn't understand why the military had not recognized the contrail of an aircraft. "The Air Force must ... understand how contrails are formed," he said. "Why they can't get some major out to belabor the obvious, I don't know."
Tips for a good resume
It's not an official personnel document. It's not a job application. It's not a "career obituary"! And it's not a confessional.
Also, look at some of the volunteer work you've done in the past and see if any of THAT helps document some skills you'll need for your new job.
General Rule: Tell what you WERE doing, as gracefully as possible--rather than leave a gap.
If you were doing anything valuable (even if unpaid) during those so-called "gaps" you could just insert THAT into the work-history section of your resume to fill the hole. Here are some examples:
* 1993-95 Full-time parent -- or
* 1992-94 Maternity leave and family management -- or
* Travel and study -- or Full-time student -- or
* Parenting plus community service
* 1993-1995 Secretary/Receptionist; Jones Bakery, Micro Corp., Carter Jewelers -- or
* 1993-95 Waiter/Busboy; McDougal's Restaurant, Burger King, Traders Coffee Shop.
Also you can just drop some of the less important, briefest jobs.
But don't drop a job, even when it lasted a short time, if that was where you acquired important skills or experience.
Here's an example: "Transformed a disorganized, inefficient warehouse into a smooth-running operation by totally redesigning the layout; this saved the company thousands of dollars in recovered stock."
Another example: "Improved an engineering company's obsolete filing system by developing a simple but sophisticated functional-coding system. This saved time and money by recovering valuable, previously lost, project records."
* A&S Hauling & Cleaning (Self-employed) -- or
* Household Repairman, Self-employed -- or
* Child-Care, Self-employed
Be sure to add "Customer references available on request" and then be prepared to provide some very good references of people you worked for.
* Eligible for U.S. credentials -- or
* Graduate studies in Instructional Design, in progress -- or
* Master's Degree anticipated December 1997
